Today's Maryland Football Hype: We Have Practice Reports
What better way to follow the progress of your Maryland Terrapins football team than to get down to the nitty gritty: practice reports. Yes, the Terrapin Times online has full reports of what transpired in practice over the week. Unfortunately you have to pay for access to the site. Alternatively, you could join the Terrapin Club and get the Terrapin Times in print for "free." By joining the club, you can also earn Terp Points. By accumulating several hundred of these points, you can get better seats to football games or season tickets to the basketball team 20 years from now.
Anyway, tomorrow night is the season opener against NIU. NIU shouldn't expect to walk out of Byrd Stadium with a W like they did last season at home in the Chicago suburbs. Terps will start out shaky but will get it together by the second half. With a new, unproven QB, Maryland can't expect to run out to a 14 to 21 point lead by halftime. But they should win by that margin or more. I'll give the Terps a 24-10 win in this one as the offense gets comfortable by game's end. You might not think that's a particularly good score given the Terps' #19 ranking, but we've started out 0-2 the last two seasons. For now, just a W will do as far as I'm concerned.
For more football hype, the Baltimore Sun has previews for the Terps, the ACC, Navy, Towson, and Morgan State. (You should also check out the photo section from last year's Gator Bowl to relive our thrashing of this year's alleged #13 team, West Virginia.) Pay close attention to the section called the "Not-so Big East" in the ACC preview for the reason West Virginia might end up with a good final record this year. Money quote:
"The Big East goes from seven to eight, losing Boston College in the wake of Miami and Virginia Tech, gaining South Florida, Cincinnati and Louisville."
Some real football powers moving into the Big East. The Washington Post has an article on the Terps' tight ends. At West Virginia, those are sheep. I'm sorry, that's just the rumor that was going around when I was at College Park.
In a final piece of football hype, the prep preview is also out in this morning's Washington Post. Once again, the Yankees/Duke of DC area high school sports, the DeMatha Stags, are the area's #1 team. My little bro's high school, Good Counsel, is #4. But the real story, mark my words, is St. John's College High School. Consult the schedule and head out to a game and cheer on new coach Joe Patterson as he leads the Cadets to what I am certain will be a highly successful season.
In closing: Go Terps! Go Navy! Go Johnnies!

BigEastinDC - Your article on UConn football had one telling sentence:
"'Our people had to learn how to tailgate,' said Tolokan. 'It was an all-new world.'"
I'm not impressed. If all WVU has to do is beat teams whose fans don't know how to tailgate, then I guess they have it made in-conference. Plus UConn's main weapon, it's QB, will be gone after this season. Two years from now, UConn's fans might be able to grill a better burger, but the team might be a little shakier.
And UConn's football coach had better not steal Maryland recruits like it's evil basketball coach does.
