Don't Believe the Hype

All you Big East fans out there who think Saturday's 56-23 win by West Virginia shows they deserve a #10 ranking should reconsider their position. According to CBS Sportsline, East Carolina is ranked #113...out of #117 Div. I-A schools! I don't lend too much credibility to this poll because they have Maryland ranked #27 when they are ranked in the 21-22 range in all human-based polls. But let's get real. WVU will not win a game this year against a ranked, non-Big East team. No Big East should even sniff the Top 25.

Let's review. There is one team from the Big East in the Top 25: WVU. Other Big East winners this weekend: #32 Boston College over #102 Ball State by 7, #51 Rutgers over #56 Michigan state by 6, #72 UConn over something called Murray State by 38. Losses by #82 Syracuse and #100 Temple totalled 91 points combined. I personally witnessed Syracuse's 51-0 loss to Purdue and let me tell you, it was absolute domination on both sides of the ball. If it wasn't for a drive during the last two minutes of the second half, Syracuse would have had negative rushing yards for the game, even with a "Heisman Trophy candidate"

And these are WVU's in-conference opponents. I guess they get their ranking based on projected final record rather than talent on the field. We'll see what happens when the Terps meet WVU in two weeks. Mark it.
